I just got back from a book tour in San Diego!  What a gift this time of year.  I met so many incredible people and received such generous contributions to my efforts!  Below is an image of the Self-Realiaztion Fellowship Gardens in Encinitas, CA.  I’ll tell you more about my visit there below.

After I landed, I drove to Coronado Island to stay with good friends who used to live in Nashville.  Betty spent every Tuesday one school year volunteering at my art center, The Creative Fitness Center, because my third child was a baby and she knew I needed the extra help.  She hosted a wine and cheese meet & greet at her house that night and I met Ms. Vicki (mentioned in previous e-mail) who came down from northern California with her friend, Sussy!  They hold artist retreats in Dutch Flat, CA north of Sacramento and I am so happy to announce that we will be holding an Artist Within Retreat with them the first or second weekend in October 2009!  I also met Danielle from the Diva Craft Lounge!  It was an incredible group of people.  The next day I had a book signing at a boutique, Scott James in downtown San Diego!  Thanks, Rich and Scott!  I met some wonderful people.  One very talented designer I spoke with, Michael Crosby, commented about how he was so tired of the “conversation”.  In other words, the consistent topic of the economy, how hard everything is, etc. is getting old and not creating any opportunity for anyone!  The next morning I was on “San Diego Living”, a morning news show, and I commented to the host that the left-brain talk that is precipitated by this economic climate works against the energy we need to pull us all out of it!  (Go to SanDiego6.com and click on the San Diego Living icon to learn more about that interview.)  Thursday night I was back on Coronado at Bay Books for a signing.  I had such a great time speaking to the group and everyone left inspired and energized–there is HOPE!  Friday I was interviewed on Big Blend Radio on their business show, Success Express.  Go to www.southwestblend.com and click on the image of my book!  LAter that afternoon I met with another radio host, Dulcinea who has the Evolution Revolution radio show!  We talked about the importance of being a part of something that benefits the common good and does not solely serve to benefit one’s bank account.  We are both on a mission!  Go to www.evolutionrevolutionradio.com for more info.

Saturday morning, before my book signing at the Encinitas Barnes & Noble, I visited the Self-Realization Fellowship meditation garden.  What an incredible garden perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean.  The gardens were immaculate, lush and out of this world!  Now, for those of you left-brainers who are going “woo-hoooooooo, meditation gardens…” think about this.  Life is really, more than anything, a mental game.  What that means is that our fulfillment and success are more tied to our mental state than anything else.  Think of the deathbed analogy.  When you are at the end, what is going to make you feel content and fulfilled?  If you can look back at a life where you were able to maneuver through the challenges with your principles, friendships and priorities entact that will be a good feeling.  Regret comes from the feeling of somehow “missing the boat”.  There are a lot of people out in CA (and everyhwere) experiencing enormous financial hardship and loss right now.  Their challenge is to find satisfaction and joy within themselves-not from material things.  Meditation is the opportunity to center oneself and tune in to the bigger picture.  Remember, creative and meditative activity produce the same brain waves.  Your Artist Within is the voice that can turn hardship into opportunity, challenges into successes.  We all need to tune in to that voice!

One last thing.  I had an amazing experience as I drove down Hwy. 101 through Encinitas.  I saw a gallery called Art N Soul and under those words  on the window were printed ART . COMMUNITY .  SOCIAL CHANGE

I had to stop!  I met the owner, Cindy, and she explained that they all volunteered there and gave all their profits to 4 local charities!  Even in these challenging times they were able to donate $22,000 to their charities in 2008!  What an inspiration!  I left them with a stack of my books so that they could give all the proceeds to their charities.  I have no doubt that amazing connections will be made as a result!  So fun!

Thank you for reading!  Please comment so I know that you are out there!  Tell your mind that you want some right-brain/Artist Within energy today and expect amazing things to happen.

I just saw a man at the coffee shop reading The Rise of the Creative Class by Richard Florida (great book).  I introduced myself and gave him a card.  I told him to let me know if there was any way I could help his efforts.  He is in economic development.  Florida’s book states that you can measure the health of an economy by its “creative index”.  Love it!  Create a great day, everyone!  Whitney

I was on a radio show yesterday called “Diva Craft Lounge” with Danielle and Rayme.  So fun!  Go to www.divacraftlounge.com and click on the Feb. 4th show to listen to my interview (if you listen to it on iTunes it starts at -30.08 (about half way through the show).

I also spoke with another woman in northern California who has an art retreat center up in the mountains near Lake Tahoe!  Check out her blog at www.missvicky.blogspot.com .  I think we are going to schedule an Artist Within Retreat there for the end of September 2009!  Her space is in the mountains, on a lake, in a small town, with a hotal on the premises, guest homes and everything we could need walking distance.  It sounds lovely!  Click on the Retreats and Workshops page of this blog to read descriptions!

I am so grateful for the people I am meeting and being introduced to as a result of this book!  For me, it has always been working with people, learning from them, and sharing my passion for creativity and personal empowerment that has made it all worthwhile!

I spoke with the old friend who had called me out of the blue after I had blogged about “coincidences”.  He is in his 70’s and has had a career that has spanned early childhood education (he mentioned he was the only man in his school), accessorizing ALL of the TGI Fridays, ,mentoring OPRAH (!!!), and starting the Dream House program.  He is convinced that a foundational part of the imbalance/disfunctionality in our society today is the unequal treatment of men and women.  He has three granddaughters and is accutely aware of more importance being placed on the opinions, actions, accomplishments of men than women.  WHAT DO YOU THINK? (please comment)

I told him I thought instead of women being “brought up” to the same level as men, that everyone needed to take a sidestep to gain more respect for the female mind/way of thinking.  It is not simply that we can do anything that men can do, it is that the way we do things is JUST AS valuable as the way men do things.

I have had others ask me if the left brain was more masculine and the right more feminine.  For some reason, I am hesitant to turn it into a male/female thing, but certainly I think it is easier for women to access the right brain perspective than men.  Right brain thinking does not seek to control and it has no ego (watch Dr. Jill’s speech on www.ted.com).  Certainly that makes it harder for most men.  I think it is a lot like the need for all of us to gain a new awareness of right/left brain.  It is not that either side is bad or wrong, it is that we need to be accessing both sides to operate the most effectively!  Likewise, the male and female way of doing things need to be better integrated in business, politics, education, etc.  I have been told that I need to nurture my male “energy” more (more structure, more attention to detail, numbers, etc.) and I know there are plenty of men out there that need to embrace their “inner female”!  Let me know what you think!  Comment…..

(Whew! and I was not sure what to write about when I sat down here this morning!)
